About the Opportunity

The Senior Analytics Engineer will serve as the analytical modeling reference on data platform modernization projects for industrial clients on Azure Databricks. You will be responsible for turning legacy business logic into tested, documented data products, each with an owner per domain, powering Power BI dashboards, natural-language analytics, and AI agents.

The role involves working with data owners in the business areas and with the client’s technical leadership to define metrics, business rules, and modeling standards. It also includes leading the evolution of the analytics layer within the squad and mentoring mid-level and junior analytics engineers.

We are looking for a hands-on professional who writes code, backs technical decisions with data, and delivers autonomously in legacy environments and at a fast pace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and structure scalable data models using a framework (dbt or equivalent) on Databricks, in the Silver and Gold layers, defining naming conventions, layering, tests, documentation, and code review standards.
  • Refactor legacy transformations in PySpark/SQL notebooks into modular, tested models, maintaining KPI parity with current reports through reconciliation.
  • Lead discovery with data owners to define grain, business rules, KPIs, and responsibilities, turning them into domain-based data products within a domain-oriented operating model (data mesh).
  • Build and govern the semantic layer (metric definitions, Unity Catalog Metric Views or equivalent) consumed by Power BI, natural-language analytics (Databricks AI/BI Genie), and AI agents.
  • Implement data quality as code: tests, freshness SLAs, anomaly checks, and observability (e.g., Elementary), with a defined owner for each alert.
  • Support the decommissioning of legacy BI tools and the consolidation of the Power BI portfolio on top of governed models.
  • Design source-independent staging and conformed dimensions, so that ERP changes affect downstream models as little as possible.
  • Apply governance at the modeling layer together with Data Engineering: Unity Catalog permissions, classification and masking of personal data, lineage, and documentation of data subject to regulatory controls.
  • Optimize the cost and performance of production models, taking into account data volume and compute consumption.
  • Set up CI for the analytics layer (lint, slim CI, automated tests) on Azure DevOps and review the code of mid-level and junior analytics engineers.
  • Present indicators, trade-offs, and technical decisions to client leadership.
  • Document decisions (architecture decision records, data contracts, and runbooks) and support the evolution of the analytics layer.
  • Have the freedom and critical thinking to propose and challenge solutions related to data modeling and the data platform.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Senior experience in analytics engineering or data modeling in production environments.
  • Advanced SQL and production experience with dbt Core (incremental models, snapshots, macros, packages, tests, and documentation), including defining project structure and modeling standards.
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks (Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, SQL Warehouse) or an equivalent cloud lakehouse/data warehouse.
  • Mastery of dimensional modeling (Kimball, SCDs, conformed dimensions) and experience defining metrics with business areas.
  • Experience modeling data for Power BI (star schema, performance, row-level security) and knowledge of information design.
  • Proven experience migrating legacy logic (notebooks, stored procedures, or logic embedded in BI) to a governed modeling layer without breaking reports.
  • Advanced knowledge of cost and performance optimization for high-volume data models.
  • Intermediate/advanced knowledge of Python and PySpark for reading, refactoring, and validating code and data.
  • Advanced experience with Git and CI/CD in data projects (Azure DevOps or GitHub).
  • Experience leading end-to-end analytics projects and providing technical guidance to analytics engineers.
  • Experience presenting indicators and technical decisions to senior leadership, backing cost-versus-benefit trade-offs.
  • Solid knowledge of AI and its applications, including preparing data and metrics for consumption by agents, plus a grasp of statistics and machine learning.
  • Autonomy and a results-driven mindset to deliver at a fast pace in legacy environments.
  • Availability for a hybrid model, with 2 days per week on-site in Monções/SP.
  • Fluent Portuguese and advanced English.

Nice to haves

  • Experience with ERP data: SAP S/4HANA, SAP Datasphere/Business Data Cloud, or TOTVS Protheus.
  • Experience with mining, heavy industry, or industrial automation data (e.g., production, grade, recovery, maintenance MTBF/MTTR).
  • Experience with supply chain or HR KPIs.
  • Knowledge of data mesh, domain ownership models, and DAMA-DMBOK practices.
  • Experience with data controls for SOX.
  • Experience with semantic layers (Unity Catalog Metric Views, dbt Semantic Layer) and Databricks AI/BI Genie.
  • Experience with data observability tools (Elementary, Monte Carlo, or similar).
  • Experience migrating from Qlik to Power BI.
  • Databricks Professional, dbt Developer/Architect, or Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) certification.
  • Daily use of AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code) in data work.
